These signs, or  , the graph for Libra turned upside down, were used in alchemy for the process of letting an in liquid dissolved substance precipitate through the evaporation of the liquid, precipitation. The signs has also been used to indicate the results of such precipitations, the precipitate.
Diderot in his Encyclopedia states that  was used by the chemists of the eighteenth century for mercury precipitate.
