One of the alchemists' many signs for argent vif (French for living silver, i.e. mercury). That element, however, was commonly drawn with the sign  for Mercurius, the god, and Mercury, the planet. Other synonyms were  ,  ,  and  . With the small circles filled, as  , or as shown here, the sign was called the button cross in Christian symbolism.
