A sign for camphor in early chemistry. Camphor was used as a medicament. One of its uses during the nineteenth century was to cause convulsions and unconsciousness in schizophrenics or severely depressed patients. Later the psychiatrists started to induce convulsions and unconsciousness by means of heavy doses of insulin, or very strong electric shocks to the brain. As with the camphor- induced convulsions this still was to treat the symptoms and not the disorder itself. Synonyms are the entry signs above, and in Group 39, in which entry more data are given.
