This sign structure is sometimes used to indicate an inn on maps and a mosque on nautical charts. Mosque is also drawn  and  .
Turned around to  or  it was used by the alchemists to signify calcinated copper, or copper oxide. This substance, however, was more commonly drawn  and otherwise.
According to some sources this sign was also used on the banners of the troops of the Mongolian empire in the thirteenth century.
