This sign structure has been used in Western ideography since ancient times. In ancient Greece it was the sign for Ares, the war god, interpreted by many as a pictorial sign for the shield and spear. It can also be seen as for the spirit of the individual, possessed (pierced) by the arrow, the symbol for the idea of directed movement or action, i.e. a symbol representing the ability to take action, goal- orientation and masculinity.

In electrical contexts means ampere meter, or ammeter, while in geology it is used to represent a flat, scored rock face, the arrow indicating the direction of the ice flow that scratched the rock's surface.
