39:7 · An alchemical sign for pyrophorus. These were probably pulverized metals or other substances that easily absorbed oxygen from the air and thereby were heated until they caught fire or glowed. One such substance was Homburg's phosphorus, a mixture of coal and potassium sulphate. This is a sign from eighteenth-century chemistry.
