The sign for the element of fire,  , but with a cross added to its top became the most common symbol for phosphorus, a substance that is closely associated with fire. Phosphorus was also drawn  . As phosphorus was not discovered until 1669,  is in fact an early chemical sign rather than a late alchemical.
