The alchemists freely borrowed signs from astrology.  was used by alchemists during the seventeenth century to signify sublimation or sublimate. The sign  had the same meaning.
The sublimation was a process whereby a substance was heated until it was transformed into steam or gas. Then it was cooled very fast to let it become solid directly, without first going through the stage of being fluid (an impossibility according to modern physics, but if the fluid stage was short enough it could give the impression of being nonexistent).
In modern ideography this sign is used on TV sets and stereos to mean tape recorder or video. It can also be drawn  .
