During the seventeenth century this structure was used as pattern for the natal chart (often now somewhat misleadingly called the horoscope). The triangles between the inner and outer horizontal-vertical squares correspond to the 12 houses (see the Word Index for definitions). The name and date of birth of the individual was written in the inner square.
