This sign, or a similar one with more concentric circles, as the entry sign below, is often found on Nordic rock carvings. It has also been found on cliff paintings in the Sahara and other places. In all these cases is closely associated to , , and (see the section "The development of sign structures through the ages" in Part III).
The similar sign Adinkirahane, or , used on clothes in Ghana, means the highest, the best, or the king.
