The cross of Philip, the apostle, is a Latin cross on its side. According to the legend, St. Philip was crucified on a cross in this position. The cross of Phillip appears on the flags of the Nordic countries, , but for unknown reasons on no other country's flag.
The Danish flag, Dannebrogen, showing a white cross of Philip on red, came into use in the fourteenth century and is believed to be the oldest national flag on earth.
