According to Diderot's Encyclopedia a sign for azur, lapis lazuli, an azure-blue, opaque, semi-precious stone. On behalf of its beautiful colour this mineral has been much appreciated through the ages. It has been used for mosaics, vases, ornaments and jewelry, and powdered as main ingredient of the much sought after and expensive authentic ultra-marine colour.
