20:4 · This Egyptian hieroglyph represents the moon and the month although the moon can never be observed in this position from the earth in relation to the horizon (except on those extremely rare occasions when there occurs a partial eclipse and the earth shadows all but the uppermost part of the moon). It is, however, quite common to turn around pictorial signs of this type so that they become in a way non-pictorial, when they are used in ideographical writing systems.
    In the Hittite hieroglyphic system the similar sign signified the moon and the month.
