This sign is named xomsa or khamsa (the number 5, in Arabic). It is the hand of Fatima, the Prophet's favourite daughter. Khamsa is a symbol of good fortune. It stands for the support group, the blood revenge group, or the closest male relatives, not further than five degrees of relationship from oneself.
Note that , a variation of khamsa, appears between the arms of the cross on the medal for the Johannites-Maltese Order. Is this an ideographic remain from the crusaders' wars against, and final defeat by the Muslims?
