A sign for aqua regia or agua regalis, Latin for king's water. Aqua regia was a mixture of three parts concentrated hydrochloric acid to one part concentrated nitric acid. It was used by the alchemists to dissolve gold. Gold was different from the other metals, for it withstood the usual acids and other dissolvants.
