17:1 · The sign 17:1 is the most common sign in astronomy and astrology today for the planet Jupiter. The variation 17:1 is the most common in printed material, and 17:1 is more common in old texts and charts.
Jupiter moves in the sixth Bodean orbit from the sun (see Bode's law), has an orbital time of 12 years, and is the largest planet in the solar system. Jupiter is different from the other planets (except for Saturn) in that it radiates more energy (of radio-wave frequencies) than it receives from the sun. The Jupiter system with its 4 big moons and 12 smaller (with a diameter less than 100 km) is in way a solar system within the solar system.
In the graphic astrological symbolism 17:1 shows the crescent of receptivity (the personality) open outwards (sensitive to society at large), placed above and sustained by the cross of matter. Thus 17:1 is a symbol for building upon the established order of material life on earth. However, the crescent sign of 17:1 often is more like , the sign for potential power, as can be seen in 17:1.
The key word for 17:1 as a symbol for psychological functions is expansion. Jupiter also represents the establishment, the society, institutionalized religion, authorities, and enlightened government. It also stands for empathy and philanthropy. When used in psychological astrology Jupiter indicates the ability to understand and adapt to the established social structure and the desire to expand in knowledge, for instance, via studies and travelling.
Anatomically 17:1 is closely associated with the liver, the hip joints, and the pituitary gland, as well as with the metabolism in general.
In the family of gods in Greek mythology 17:1 represents Zeus, the highest of the gods, and his counterpart in Roman mythology, Jupiter. Zeus-Jupiter is the ruler and protector of the home and the family life. On a higher level he is the protector and ruler of the state and the established society. In natal astrology 17:1 is the Greater Benefic while 41a:7, Venus, is the Lesser Benefic, and 17:8, Saturn is the Greater Malefic, bringer of sorrow, the one who deprives. 17:1 is male planet, well placed in Cancer, 50:15, which zodiacal sign, like 17:1, is closely associated with the home and the family life. 17:1 is the ruling planet of Sagittarius, 15:19, and together with 05:7, Neptune, rules over Pisces, 11:6. Jupiter's energies have difficulties expressing themselves in a positive way in 46:2, 51:14, and 53:40.
Due to the fact that a full orbit of Jupiter around the sun takes 12 years, 17:1 has been used in botany to indicate perennial plants. Compare with 26:8 and 42:28, which signify plants with a life cycle of one year and two years, respectively.
Alchemists used 17:1 and similar signs (see the following four entry signs) to represent tin, zinc, and sometimes even electrum, an alloy of silver and gold. In Cabbalistic mysticism 17:1 is the sign of the Angel Sachiel.
