This sign appears among the Egyptian hieroglyphs and was originally a pictogram for a winding wall. This hieroglyph together with  , the pictogram for house, could mean street, the winding walls of houses at the sides of a path make up a street.
Mirrored and turned 90 degrees, it becomes  , an ideogram for self in both early and more modern systems of Chinese writing.
In dictionaries  is sometimes used to indicate a compound word.
Compare with  , a sign used on clothes in Ghana called nkyin nyin, meaning transformation of self.
