It is the Western world's most common ideogram for lightning, thunderstorm, and high voltage electric current. It is also a general sign for mythology in some dictionaries, and for the field or subject of electricity in other contexts.
When it appears in a photographic context (e.g. on cameras), it signifies flashlight or flash bulb.
Turned upside down, , it is used to indicate television station on certain maps. Compare with , radio station, on some maps.
As a sign for lightning it is rather synonymous with the ancient sign , the staff of Zeus or Jupiter, depicting a bundle of lightnings symbolizing divine power.
