Similar in graphic structure to a mirror image of N in the Western alphabet, this sign is, in all probability, a basic gestalt in Western ideography. With the basic element of the straight line thrice repeated and connected, some ten graphs can be created, all of which are common in Western ideography. Many of them, like  and this entry sign, are signs for danger.  is associated with energy and power, which are dangerous.
This runic structure is seldom seen in the Nordic runic alphahets. Occasionally it is used instead of  , the sun rune, and  , the yew-tree rune. In the runic tradition of Germany the sign is the Sigrune, i.e. the rune of victory (together with  in Group 4). It is strongly associated with military power, violence, battle, death and war. is also a sign for heat. In industrial engineering, for example,  represents an electric melting oven.
is used in some military systems, as in  for liaison and signal company.
In computer flowcharting indicates communication links.
In the Japanese Art of warfare, a treatise on military strategy from the end of the Middle Ages, the similar  means way, path or street, depending upon the surrounding signs.
