This is the most common sign in astrology and astronomy for the zodiacal sign of Sagittarius, the Archer. The sun enters this section of the zodiac (see  in Group 35) around November 22, and exits around December 21. Sagittarius is symbolized by a being whose lower body is that of a horse, and upper that of a man, known as a centaur. The man part is holding a stretched bow, the arrow in place.
The exact age of this graph is difficult to determine. In the form  it was used already in the natal charts (horoscopes) of ancient Greece. Other signs used for Sagittarius are  and  .
The sign of the archer symbolizes the projection of self toward new horizons both literally (long voyages of exploration) and metaphorically (deep or far reaching studies, new ideals, new spheres of activities).
Sagittarius' period in the solar year also corresponds to the last cycle of the moon before the winter equinox. Its end means the arrival of midwinter, the longest night (in the Northern Hemisphere).

Persons born with many planets in fiery signs are believed to be characterized by dynamic creativity and a way of perceiving the world through those possibilities they intuitively feel are attainable, rather than through their sense impressions (the earthy triplicity), their system of ideas (the airy triplicity), or their emotions (the watery triplicity). Those individuals who are strongly influenced by the sign of the Archer, for example by the presence of  , or the moon and other planets in , are considered to be flexible, adaptable, and able to learn things easily. They are also said to strive for high ideals more than persons born in other signs generally do.
The sign is ruled by the planet Jupiter,  , the psychological principle of expansion, and adaptability to the well-established institutions of society.
