Apart from being the wellknown letter, this sign is common in modern systems to denote distance and similar concepts. It was at times used to denote saintliness or holiness in connection with names of saints.
It is one of the many signs used for lead in early chemistry, and has long been used for south in geographical contexts.
The alchemists used  to denote the essence, spiritus or spirit of substances.  in Group 6 is but one of the many synonyms. The use of to denote saintliness or holiness is closely associated with this alchemical use of it.
