This sign is known as representing a caltrap, and is quite common in heraldry. It is a somewhat pictorial sign representing four nails forged together in such a way that one of them is always pointing upward when the instrument is placed on the ground. It was a weapon often used during the Middle Ages to wound horses and bare foot soldiers, or soldiers with thin soled shoes. |
