Used in botany to indicate that a plant is very poisonous. In chess contexts it stands for checkmate (also drawn and ).
In mathematics it means differs from or is not the same as when used between mathematical symbols. The same structure, but turned 90 degrees, was used in early pharmacology on recipes for medications to mean may it be useful or take with God's blessing (usually drawn ) and was called the cross of invocation.
