The combination of the diagonal cross with a vertical line is of special importance in Western ideography. It is the sign for Jesus Christ (from the initials of the Lord's name in Greek: I and X).
In the form  it is a sign for Sunday on clog almanacs (for more details on clog almanacs, see  in Group 5).
As  it signifies the sextile aspect in astrology, i.e. a 60-degree angle between two planets as seen from the earth. It is a sign for a fixed star in astronomy (compare this with  in botany from Group 3). In the Anglo-Saxon tradition,  , or  , was a rune that stood for material wealth.
Other uses: ammonia and ammonium salts in early chemistry (which were also drawn  ); seldom used in dictionaries; snow in meteorology; wild growing plants in botany; agents accepted in business economy; and born in genealogy ( is synonymous).
If the sign is doubled or tripled it can represent a heavy snowstorm or a steady snowfall depending on whether the signs are combined vertically or horizontally.
The same structure as a closed sign,  in Group 28, means a conservation area protected by law. appears (as does  ) on modern telephones and signifies special programming facilities.
According to a certain Germanic tradition, taken up by the Nazis, for example on a ring worn by all SS men, means heil, well-being. The sign was accompanied on the SS ring by the engraved rune  and a skull.
