8:5 · Some of the earliest known Western ideograms consist of horizontal, vertical or circular rows of dots, as can be seen in the rock carved ideogram . Many such signs have been found on cave walls and artefacts from prehistoric times. A 24,000 year old amulett of mammoth ivory shows circular rows of dots.
Long horizontal rows of dots are also used in typography to connect two groups of signs and indicate that a relation or correspondence exists between their denotations, or between the signs themselves.
For irregular rows of points or dots, see 14:25 in Group 14.
