This sign, which is common in Western ideography, is used either alone or in combination with other signs.
It represents the Holy Spirit in Christianity. According to some Christian sources  is a stylized dove. Alchemists alternated between ,  , and  when signifying the essence of a substance, its spirit, or spiritus.
The earliest known structure similar to it is probably the Egyptian hieroglyph  , for denial or negation.
