    The most common graph for the planet Neptune is a staff of Neptune with or without barbs and with a crossbar near the lower end of the vertical line. Neptune was discovered in 1846. By that time these signs had been in use for many hundreds of years in alchemy. See 05:8 (the entry below) for data on that use.
    In astrology, 05:7 is the mystical planet. According to Robert Hand 05:7 symbolizes the final and conclusive reality in which all polarities exist at the same time but without any being distinctly discernible from another. 05:7 is nirvana, the mystical perception of godliness and truth, nonattachment. Along with Saturn, 17:8, it stands for maya, the illusory reality. In conjunction with Venus, 41a:7, it denotes artistic creativity.
    05:7 also signifies self-denial or a defeated ego, and deceitful or secretive activities such as poisoning.
    When combined with other planets in a negative way Neptune stands for a withdrawal from the world into drug abuse or mental illness.
    Astronomers consider 05:7 worthy of special attention because it is the only planet whose orbit totally disagrees with the law for planetary orbits discovered by Johann Bode. See 17:12 in Group 17 for a description of Bode's law.
    According to the graphic symbolism of astrology we find that 05:7 is a combination of the crescent of receptivity and personality, 02:1, open upward for spirituality, pierced by 03:2, the cross of material existence, showing susceptibility to lower instincts. Alan Oken has given the following key characteristics associated with the planet Neptune:
    1. the dreamer, artist, musician, film-maker;
    2. the great fraud, cheat, swindler;
    3. psychic powers;
    4. the mystic, spiritualist, and prophet; and
    5. all-embracing love.
    The planet Neptune is considered to be the planetary ruler of Pisces, 11:6, which sign consists of two Neptune graphs joined together. Neptune is also supposed to rule plants used for the purpose of intoxication, such as Indian hemp, i.e. marijuana, the coca bush, the opium poppy, the peyote cactus, and the psilocybine mushroom.
    Anatomically 05:7 rules such bodily functions as the pineal glands and those parts of the nervous system that are sensitive to psychic impulses and related to the aura.
    Everything with boundaries that are in one way or another undefined or unclear is ruled by this planet, for instance, gases, dreams, fantasy, vague hunches, etc. It is the symbol for escapism, drug intoxication, and glamour, as well as for high ideals and ideal love.
    The planet Neptune is also drawn , 42:49, 42:46, and the two entry signs following after the next two entries.
