5:22 · This sign was used in alchemy and early chemistry to denote antimony, a metal that is not found in a pure state in nature. It has long been used in medicine. The name of this arsenic-like metal, antimoine in French (moine = monk), refers to that in the Middle Ages some monks ate antimony compounds to get fatter, but were poisoned by them.
