Here we have the arrow sign, one of the oldest and most common of ideograms. Both and have been discovered in prehistoric caves and engraved on rocks in the Sahara. An arrow sign indicates movement in a specific direction. It is used with this meaning by the boy-scouts, as a traffic sign, etc.
In some modern sign systems it is placed between other signs and implies that the sign to the right of an arrow pointing to the right is the result of, or follows logically from what is denoted by the sign to the left of the arrow: (a b).
The arrow is also an ideogram representing the male sex. Compare with , a sort of inversion of , for the receiving end, the female sex. Occasionally has a phallic symbolism, as in .
In modern ideography the arrow sign is also associated with snow and frost. See, for example, , frosty mist, a combination of the sign , mist, and . In the computer world can mean exponentialization (also drawn ), i.e. a multiplication of the sum by itself. In physics is sometimes used to denote a center of gravity.
