The rune named kaun or kaen is associated with openings and opening up, according to the Anglo-Saxon runic tradition.
The sign  belongs to the earliest rune alphabet or futhark, so called after the sounds of the first six runes.
In Scandinavia the name of this rune meant boil or pustule. Apart from plague, boils occurred only as a result of infections in wounds. Here we have an association to  as a military sign, and to  for arrow.
