This sign means water in all times and all cultures. It is among the earliest of the Egyptian hieroglyphs.
Today, however, it has also been adopted as a general sign for resistance of some kind, especially in electrical contexts, where it can stand for resistor or rheostat. The structure warns that something is dangerous or resisting. In the Swedish hobo sign system it means danger angry dog.
