Potash is sometimes written in this way in alchemy. The ashes left after the burning of plants contain this substance (potassium carbonate). It is used in baking to help the dough rise, and in the production of soft soap, glass, and potassium cyanide. The last substance is highly poisonous, and used in the extraction of gold from the minerals containing it.
