power of murderous aggression, violence and warfare in ancient Greece. It was also drawn

Ares was the son of Zeus and Hera, and worshipped in all of ancient
Greece, but most intensively in the aggressive warrior and slave
holding state of Sparta.
In the Roman Empire
Ares' Roman counterpart, Mars,

one of that empire's most important divinities after Jupiter.
