An ancient ideogram. When used in the earliest Chinese writing,
this meant the sunrise, a new day. Much later in Western astronomy it had the same meaning but
was also used to denote the lower edge of the disc of the
sun. The horizontal line signifies the ground, the
horizon, and
is the universal ideogram for
the sun.
