This is the Mantuan
cross. The
version here shown is the Eisernes Kreuz, the Iron Cross, a German Order medal. The
order was inaugurated by King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia in the
year 1813, and intended to unite and encourage his people in their
fight against Napoleon's French armies.
This cross is used by the German navy. During the First World War
it appeared as a battle sign on the sides of German tanks, fighter aircraft, etc.
It has also been used as a fascist symbol, for example, in
France.
One reader of this work sent the following additional information
by e-mail: "Five centuries ago the
Knights Order of the Temple (symbol: Cross of Malta) was outlawed by
the Pope. But in Portugal they remained quite powerful (their Master
Knight at the time being Prince Henry of Portugal). In Portugal they
just renamed it the Order of Christ (symbol: Cross of Christ
without the external circle). The members of the order
were so powerful and rich that they actually payed the Portuguese
discoveries. That's why the discoverers' ships used that symbol on
their sails. Also I want to add that the Crutch Cross is a simplified
draw of the Cross of Christ. It was used centuries ago, for instance
carved in milestones placed on roads close to the ports by Portuguese
ship crews. It was a `quick signature' of the Kingdom of
Portugal".
