This is the St. Brigit or Bridget cross with five
precious stones depicted, representing the five wounds of
Christ.
St. Brigit, born 1303, was a Swedish noblewoman. She married a
nobleman and gave birth to four sons and four daughters. She was
appointed Mistress of the Court of King Magnus and Queen Blanche, the
daughter of the count of Namur in Belgium, after their marriage. When
tired of the immoral life at the court she and her husband made a
pilgrim journey to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. On their way home
her husband fell very ill. However, he was miraculously saved. After
that both she and her husband withdrew from the world and entered
monasteries. He died shortly afterwards. She then founded the Brigitine Order in Sweden about
1344.
She lived most of her later years in Rome and died there in
1373. In 1391 she was canonized by the pope Bonifacius IX.
