Symbol 26:56

26:56 ·
This sign is known as the anchor cross, because it is said that the ends of the
cross' arms are similar in shape to the flukes of an anchor. But
they also are rather similar in shape to
, or
,
the ancient symbols representing Aries, rebirth, new
beginnings, and growth.
In Rome during the third century the Christians were persecuted to
such an extent that they dared not use the cross as their symbol.
(Compare this with the way Hitler forbade the use of political and
ideological symbols other than
once he was in
power.) This led to the creation of the crux dissimulata, i.e. the disguised
or dissimilar cross. The intention was that no non-Christian
would recognize the crux dissimulata as a Christian rallying symbol
and object of worship. For this reason the anchor form
was often used as a crux dissimulata.
