22:30 · Marks of cadency were introduced in heraldry during the sixteenth century. They are marks intended to show the descent of a younger branch of a family from the main stock. They signified the order in which the sons were born. 2217a or 2217b were signs indicating the eldest son. The second, third, and fifth sons were indicated with 2003a, 2713, and 2601a, respectively. The remaining marks of cadency were pictorial. The French lily, 2430, indicated the sixth son, and a rose with five petals, the seventh.
