This Egyptian
hieroglyph represents the moon and the month although the moon can never be observed in this
position from the earth in relation to the horizon (except on those
extremely rare occasions when there occurs a partial eclipse and the
earth shadows all but the uppermost part of the moon). It is, however,
quite common to turn around pictorial signs of this type so that they
become in a way non-pictorial, when they are used in ideographical
writing systems.
In the Hittite hieroglyphic system the similar sign
signified the moon and the month.
